The Anatolian Shepherd is a large, sheep guardian dog that is native to Turkey. Standing between 26 and 30 inches, and weighing up to 150 pounds, this is a muscular dog, with a thick neck, a broad head, and a sturdy build.

The Anatalian has quite a lean build but is exceptionally powerful making it capable of fighting off just about any predator. The coat is thick and fawn in color, all except the face, which is black. Another distinctive feature is the long tail, which curls up when the dog is alert.

Originally from the Sivas-Kangal region of Turkey, the Anatolian has a long and interesting history. They have worked as sheep guardians for centuries in their native country, but have also been used for hunting and as military dogs. The are highly revered in Turkey enjoying the status of national dog.

These are strong, brave dogs who think nothing of challenging wolves and bears that threaten their flock. They are robust characters capable of living outdoors, even in extreme temperatures.

The Anatolians guarding instincts have been shaped by centuries of responsibility as a stock guardian. They are fiercely protective of those in their charge, and that of course includes their human family.

As long as you are prepared to accept the dog’s protective nature, this can be a good pet. You’ll preferably need some experience with dogs though, as the Anatolian can be a challenge and requires an assertive leader. Having said that, they are exceptionally good with kids, and easily accept other pets, plus you’ll be getting an outstanding guard dog.

One problem you should know about is there tendency to bark at night. This is due to that famous protective instinct, but it can be addressed with training and socialization.

The Anatolian is a robust, healthy breed with few major health concerns. Hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and eyelid entropion do occur, but none of the dread diseases present in some dog breeds. They can live 12 years or longer, a long time for such a large breed.

One health related problem specific to this breed, is a slow immune system. This makes them sensitive to most forms of anesthetic.

The Anatolian is quite an easy dog to maintain. They do shed heavily twice annually, and you’ll have to brush the coat every day during this period.

It goes without saying that this is not a dog to be kept in an apartment. The Anatolian needs a large secure garden and will also have to taken for long daily walks.
