Dog Breeds From A To Z: Brittany

The Brittany, or Epagneul Breton to give it its French name, is an exceptional hunting dog that is also popular as a family pet, due to its friendly, out-going nature. The breed originated in the French province of Brittany, from which it takes its name. Although most of the early records regarding the breed have been lost, it is certain that these dogs were bred to point and retriever for game bird hunters.

The Brittany first came to broad public attention when it debuted at the Paris Dog Show in 1900. In 1920, the first Brittanys reached American shores, with AKC recognition following in 1934.The Brittany is a compact, medium-sized dog, with long legs and floppy ears. The tail is either naturally short, or may be docked. Coat colors include orange and white coat, liver and white, orange roan and liver roan. Black and white is also accepted by other kennel clubs, but is considered a fault by the AKC.

These good-natured, intelligent and obedient dogs don’t very closely with their human family, and are known to be exceptionally eager to please, with a special affinity for children.Due to their intelligence, Brittanys are quick learners and easy to train. Training should be kept positive though as they are quite sensitive and don’t respond well to harsh treatment.

They are known to build a strong bond with one particular person, but generally they love everyone. They also get on well with other dogs and non-canine pets if socialized with them.

This is a healthy breed that suffers from few of the problems that typically affect purebred dogs, although epilepsy, hip dyslpasia and ear infections do occur. Median lifespan is between 12 and 14 years. Grooming a Brittany is quite easy. The coat will need to be brushed every second day or so, but unless your dog spends time in open fields, that’s about it.Dogs that spend time in open fields or woodland will have to be checked regularly for ticks.

These dogs shed very minimally, and may be suitable for people with mild allergies.

As sporting dogs, Brittanys are highly active and require regular vigorous exercise. They can do okay in an apartment due to their small size but will need, a least, a daily walk. The ideal living situation for the breed is in the countryside or a large house with an active family. Dogs that are under-exercised and receive little interaction or mental stimulation may be prone to behavioral problems and self-mutilation. But in the right circumstances and with the right owner the Brittany makes an exceptional pet.

Finding puppy names, for your Brittany is an easy task, when you know where to look. My recommendation is puppy names hq.com, a site with an extensive database of dog names including 1000s of female dog names to choose from.
