Common Dog Illnesses And Meds

Few of the most common dog sicknesses that can be dealt with medication include kidney disease, heartworm, and arthritis.

Kidney Disease

Chronic renal (kidney) failure (CRF) is a common problem in all dog breeds. With CRF, the kidneys are unable to remove waste products caused by food digestion. This leads to the buildup of toxins in the blood. Symptoms include, being severely thirsty, constant urination, bad breath, abnormal walking, vomiting, and weakness. One such medication is Furosemide(Rx). Furosemide is a diuretic, that eliminates the excess fluids caused by CRF. But remember that this drug is prohibited to pets that are dehydrated or having an electrolyte imbalance.

Heartworm

Heartworm is a usual but fatal disease that can be spread through a single mosquito bite. When a mosquito bites an infected dog and then goes on to bite another dog, heartworm larvae are also contaminated to the other dog. These worms will result to impaired blood circulation, which in turn damages the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. These worms can be present long before any symptoms show up,so it is strongly recommended that you have your pet be initially checked up even without the presence of the signs.

As with any disease, prevention is the best solution, so treatment with products such as Heartgard Plus chewables is advised. Heartgard is a medication for preventing heartworms that functions by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae for 30 days. Veterinarians will usually authorize a maximum of 12 months of heartworm preventative medicine per pet per year to insure proper dosing.

Arthritis

Symptoms of arthritis in dogs include difficulty to move, walk or stand, stiffness of the body, and weakness. But rather than watch your dog suffer doing the things he enjoys, there are drugs that will ease mobility.

One such medication is Tramadol 50 mg. This will not cure osteoarthritis, but it will help control the pain and inflammation that comes with it. You can buy discount Tramadol in some online shops. Anothe vet prescribed medicine is the immunosuppresive drug Azathioprine 50 mg. Consult with your veterinarian for the proper dosage for your dog.
